Chapter 17 â The Low Price of Peace
Legionaries didnât run when they shifted into a defensive formation. They shuffled, jogged, sprinted for short distances, and generally hurried, but they didnât run. Mainly because from columns of march, the maniples unfolded like wings. Once extended, the infantrymen closed the distances between rows until they create three distinct assault lines.
Twelve Centurions prowled behind the First Maniple watching for guidance from their left and right Tribunes. The staff officers in turn watched for signals from the Senior Tribune of Trumpet Legion. And the senior staff officer coordinated with the Battle Commander, who was looking to the General for orders.
âCavalry, even heavy cavalry, would be foolish to charge a prepared assault line,â Nabars pointed out. âBut their arrival has us stopped in the road. Any advice, General Scipio?â
âLetâs allow the Celtiberi to dictate the terms of battle for today,â Cornelius offered. âIf they delay, when they camp for the night, weâll march in and change the terms.â
âSenior Tribune Matie, have the maniples hold positions,â Nabars instructed. âGet extra javelins to the third lines. If the cavalry comes at us, I want them to pay a steep price for their stupidity.â
âYes, sir,â Metie acknowledged. He pointed at a ring of junior staff officers. âFour additional javelins for the rear ranks. Everyone holds where they are. Go.â
The six Junior Tribunes galloped away to inform the maniple Tribunes of the decisions.
âWhat are you thinking, sir?â Jace inquired.
âItâs not what Iâm thinking but what I fear,â Cornelius answered. âCould my agreement with Prince Allucius have fallen apart this quickly?â
âIf it has,â Nabars warned, âthe Celtiberi will be missing a thousand cavalrymen by dawn.â
As they talked, two long columns of riders appeared from the northwest. At the sight of the Legion battle formation, the columns halted. Six cavalrymen trotted away from the formation.
âThey want to talk, sir,â Battle Commander Nabars observed. âMetie and Iâll take a squad and go forward.â
âNo, Colonel. Itâs my nonaggression pact thatâs been violated,â Cornelius asserted. He held up a hand to hold Sidia in place and addressed Jace. âBattle Commander Kasia, care to take a ride?â
âYouâre the client, sir. Iâll be wherever you need me,â Jace responded.
âIn that case, letâs go talk to their delegation.â

As they trotted through the lines of infantrymen, Jace remarked, âsix against two, not good odds, sir.â
âLast night, I thought of Hannibal,â Cornelius mentioned. âHe commands different tribes yet finds ways to connect with their officers. But his power stems from more than the respect of Captains and Lieutenants. Somehow, Hannibal manages to inspire spearmen and soldiers. Itâs the only explanation for how he gets men to follow his complicated battle plans.â
âAnd you think by sacrificing yourself, youâll inspire your Legions?â
âOf course not,â Cornelius assured him. âIâll sacrifice you while I ride away.â
For an instant, Jace couldnât process the statement. Once he did, he replied, âThatâs a different pay scale.â
âWas that comedy or tragedy?â Cornelius questioned.
âGeneral, Iâm not following you,â Jace admitted.
âFirst, I donât think anyone is going to get sacrificed today,â Cornelius pointed out.
